Do.., Lots of healthy outdoor pursuits, from bracing walks to brisk afternoons on the beach (five go adventuring).¬† Lashings of ginger beer and sandwiches are the reward: the Pig on the Beach’s restaurant, the Canteen and Chilled Red, in Swanage, are all packed out over the festive period. Drinkers head to the Square and Compass, in Worth Matravers, for old-world charm, and the little ‘uns love afternoon tea at Chococo, a boutique chocolatier in Swanage.

Christmas Day sees the hearty plunging into the sea into a swim , but New Year’s Eve is the big event here, with everyone dressing up and spilling out into the Square and High Street at midnight
